Wright Medical Neck Fracture Cases

Many American have sought hip replacement surgery to regain the mobility and quality of life they once enjoyed. This article discusses the complications experienced by some patients who underwent hip replacement surgery and received the Profemur Z artificial hip made by Wright Medical Technology, as well as, your legal rights should you have received a defective hip implant.

The Profemur Z system consists of 3 separate parts that are assembled together during a surgery:

  1. A Femoral Head
  2. A Modular Neck
  3. A Femoral Stem

The Profemur Z was marketed by Wright Medical as a durable alternative to the other artificial hip implants on the market and as being well-suited for very active individuals. More than 10,000 patients across the country received the Profemur Z with a titanium neck in hip replacement surgery.

Prior to 2009, the neck portion of the Profemur Z hip was made of a titanium alloy metal. Some patients who have received this version of the product have suffered a catastrophic failure of their Profemur Z in which the modular neck breaks without warning necessitating an emergency revision surgery to replace the failed component.

These revision surgeries are often difficult, painful and expensive and can result in complicated or delayed recoveries, permanent disfigurement and difficulty walking.

Ryan R. Cox & Associates represents hip patients in Missouri whose Profemur Z hips have failed.

These patients allege that the Profemur Z hip with the titanium neck is subject to fretting and corrosion, which leads to dramatically premature failure of the component. Furthermore, the Profemur Z Stem has also been known to release particles of metal into the tissue surrounding the implant and into the blood. This, in turn, can cause metallosis (metal poisoning) which can lead to tissue necrosis (death) and other serious complications.

It is also alleged that Wright Medical knew or should have known when they began to market the Profemur Z implant system that its titanium components might present an unreasonably high risk of metallosis, fracture and failure.
