Winter brings risk of St. Louis snowmobile accidents, skiing accidents in Missouri

The recent ski lift accident that injured 8 skiers in Maine is being blamed on the wind, the Boston Globe reports. But it is just one high-profile example of the dangers. Three skiers have died so far this week, including fatal accidents in Colorado and Montana.

Winter brings with it the risk of skiing accidents in Missouri and snowmobile or ATV accidents in St. Louisand the surrounding areas. Either sport is dangerous. But when property or business owners are negligent, dangerous conditions can result in a St. Louis premise liability claim.

Two popular ski resorts in Missouri include Hidden Valley Golf and Ski in Eureka, just outside Saint Louis, and Snow Creek in Weston. Hidden Valley is lit for night skiing, while Show Creek has elevations that reach 300 feet.

Authorities are also preaching snowmobile safety as the winter gets started in earnest.

Quad-Cities Online provides the following tips for snowmobile riders:

-Know your equipment — make sure it is properly maintained and in good working order.

-Don’t wear long scarves, which can get caught in moving parts.

-Know the terrain.

-Know the weather forecast, especially ice and snow conditions.

-Travel at speeds reasonable for conditions.

-Wear sensible protective clothing, including helmet, goggles or face shield.

-Avoid ice-covered ponds or water bodies if not familiar with the area and the ice thickness. Drowning is one of the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities.

-Use the buddy system — never ride alone.
