About every 7 to 8 years, the average motorist in the U.S. will be in a traffic accident, researchers have found. While people who drive for a living and are on the roads more often may have a greater risk of being involved in a collision, this risk may also be higher for those who drive during high-risk times for collisions.

Below, we’ll reveal the times of day, days of the week and months of the year when your risk of being in a traffic accident is the greatest, according to federal crash data.

If you or someone you love has been injured in any type of traffic accident and you need to get on the path to financial recovery now, however, don’t hesitate to contact the seasoned St Charles & St Louis auto accident lawyer at Ryan R. Cox & Associates, LLC.

When Traffic Accidents Are Most Likely to Happen

  • At night – Between the hours of 6 pm and midnight, the risk of being in a traffic collision is the highest (when compared to any other timeframe during a 24-hour period), researchers have found. While this time frame coincides with evening rush hour when there is generally a surge in the number of vehicles on the road, it is also when there is typically a peak in distracted and impaired driving.
  • Over the weekends – Data has revealed that auto collisions typically surge on Saturdays; however, the risk of a traffic accident is also significant on Sundays and over holiday weekends. As with the evening hours, over weekends, there tends to be more travelers on the road (complicating driving conditions) and more motorists on the roads who may be impaired (particularly over weekend evenings).
  • During the summer – From June through September, there is usually a spike in traffic accidents on U.S. roadways, with the peak for collisions typically occurring in August. Two of the various reasons for this are that, during the summer, less experienced teen drivers are on the roads for a lot longer periods of time (about 40 percent more than during the school year) and that the driving conditions are typically more complicated in the summer (due to factors like more highway work crews, more cyclists/pedestrians/other travelers sharing the roadway with drivers, etc.).

So, if you’re just looking at the data, in general, you will have the greatest risk of being in a collision on a Saturday in August between 6 pm and midnight.

Additional Factors that Can Increase Your Risk of Being in Collisions

While you may have a greater risk of being in an auto wreck based on when you are driving, how you drive/handle your vehicle can also contribute to your risk of collisions. In fact, some additional factors that can increase the chances that you may be involved in a traffic accident include (but are by no means limited to):
