Safety comes first this holiday season in avoiding St. Louis car accidents

This holiday season as you venture out on the road be sure to buckle up, watch your speed, and drive safely. Holiday accident are among the most painful tragedies a family can endure. Use extra caution this year so you or someone in your family aren’t a victim of a St. Louis car accident.

In 2009, Missouri had the fourth highest number of traffic fatalities on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day among all states according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The state had a total of 24 fatalities on Christmas Day and 49 on New Year’s Day for a total of 73 fatalities.

Nationally, the NHTSA reported the number of traffic fatalities in 2009 were 640 on Christmas Day, 75 on New Year’s Eve, and 1,004 on New Year’s Day for a total of 1,719.

St. Louis lost one of their finest last Christmas Day. A Missouri State Trooper was on duty responding to a St. Louis accident when he was struck by an SUV. The Corporal’s family will be spending this holiday season remembering the accident that took their loved one’s life last Christmas Day.

Remember the following driving tips this holiday season to help the safety of you and other drivers on the road:

-Slow down and obey the posted speed limit signs on whatever type of roadway you are driving on.

-Be sure to make everyone in the vehicle wear their seat belt, even if it’s for a 5 minute trip down the street.

-Refrain from talking on your cell phone or allowing yourself to get distracted by other external sources.

-If the weather forecast is for winter weather conditions (snow, ice, or sleet) make alternate plans or postpone your plans to another time when driving conditions are safer.

-Have someone else drive if you have consumed alcohol, even if its minimal consumption

Don’t let this holiday lead to a tragedy. Be alert, be safe, and use caution on the roadways.
