Older Drivers Can Be As Risky As Teen Drivers, Study Finds

A recent study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that drivers 65 and older may be as accident-prone on the roads as inexperienced teen drivers. Analyzing crash data from 1999 through 2004, researchers discovered that:

  • At the age of 65, drivers’ fatality rates begin to rise.
  • Between 75 and 85, motorists have fatality rates that are equivalent for those associated with teen motorists (Note that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for 15 to 19 year olds).
  • At 85 and older, motorists’ fatality rate quadruples.

With the number of elderly drivers on the roads expected to grow by more than 70 percent by 2030 (due to the aging Baby Boomer population), these findings should be a big concern, researchers say.

In fact, they predict that, by 2030, drivers over 65 will be responsible for causing about 1 in every 4 (25 percent of all) fatal crashes in the U.S. To put that into perspective, in 2005, elderly drivers caused about 11 percent of all deadly traffic wrecks in the U.S.
