MoDOT’s Focus on the Road Distracted Driving Campaign Focuses on Educating Teen Drivers

For the next two months, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will be conducting a statewide campaign geared towards educating teen drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. This Focus on the Road campaign, which will run through November 6th, will reportedly involve law enforcement officials and others “engaging high school and college students across the state in assemblies and campus meetings to educate on the importance of driving distraction free.”

As part of this campaign, MoDOT officials are also asking teens to take a pledge to drive distraction free. Those who take this pledge will reportedly be entered into a drawing to win a 2015 Ford Focus,

Given that teens are generally the group of motorists most susceptible to distracted driving – and that about 1 in every 4 teens sends at least one text message every time they drive, this campaign may have some significant impacts on this demographic – as well as on roadway safety in Missouri.

Commenting on MoDOT’s distracted driving campaign, Coalition Executive Committee Chair Bill Whitfield has explained that:

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving…It’s also one of the leading factors in traffic crashes in Missouri and nationwide.

Statistics Elucidate the Prevalence & Dangers of Distracted Driving

Part of MoDOT’s teen distracted driving campaign will focus on presenting people’s personal experiences being involved in distracted driving accidents – both from victims’ and law enforcement officials’ perspectives.

Another part will also involve highlighting the bigger picture, which may involve presenting some of the following distracted driving statistics to teen motorists:

  • Nearly 25 percent of all traffic accidents in the U.S. involve some type of driver distraction.
  • Motorists who are in their teens and 20s comprise nearly 30 percent of all distracted drivers responsible for causing deadly motor vehicle accidents.
  • Distracted driving is about six times more likely to result in traffic accidents than drunk driving, and it can trigger the same types of impairments displayed by drivers who have consumed about 4 alcoholic beverages.
  • Every day in the U.S., at least 11 teens are killed in distracted driving accidents.

Underscoring the importance of the teen distracted driving campaign, MoDOT has explained:

The text, the phone call, or the messy sandwich can wait until you get where you are going. If it’s really important pull over for a few minutes. It could save your life…. Understand the problem and be a part of the solution. ARRIVE ALIVE.
