Less than Half of All U.S. Parents Register their Children’s Car Seats, NHTSA Reports

About 80 percent of parents believe it’s important to register their child’s car seat with the manufacturer. However, only about 42 percent ever follow through with the process, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have revealed as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week.

In light of child passenger safety week, the NHTSA is encouraging parents to register their child car seats, a St Louis personal injury attorney explains.

In light of child passenger safety week, the NHTSA is encouraging parents to register their child car seats, a St Louis personal injury attorney explains.

The reason that registering child car seats is so important, the NHSTA explains, is that it allows parents to hear about possible child car seat recalls as soon as possible, directly from the manufacturer.

Last year alone, at least 6 million child car seats in the U.S. were recalled, and less than half of the recalled seats have been fixed to date.

Commenting on this disturbing finding, NHSTA Administrator Mark Rosekind has stated:

The safety of children in cars is our biggest priority… NHTSA is committed to helping parents register their car seats and other child products with manufacturers, which we know is critical if there is a recall. We’re also committed to working with manufacturers to make sure parents receive a quick and thorough solution during a recall so children are protected.

What Parents Can Do: Know How to Register a Seat & Check for Recalls, NHTSA Says

To start reversing this trend and get more parents to register their children’s car seats, the NHTSA has pointed out that:

  • There are a few ways to register children’s car seats – While parents can go online to complete this registration via a manufacturer’s website (registering the seat with the model number and date found on the label), they can also complete this registration here or by completing the registration card that comes with new car seats.
  • Parents can also check if children’s car seats have been impacted by a recall – In fact, the NHTSA has a recall lookup tool that parents can use to see if their children’s car seats have been recalled for any reason. This can be important to use when car seats may have been purchased second hand or given as gifts (outside of their original packaging).

Underscoring the importance of taking either (or both) of the above steps, Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide, has stated:

The single best way for parents to learn about a recall is to register their car seat with the manufacturer. Unfortunately, this important first step doesn’t happen nearly enough… During Child Passenger Safety week, we want to remind all parents to register their car seats and take action when a recall occurs. This is a cost-free remedy the manufacturer provides — and must provide — to protect your child.
