Hyundai Recall Issued Due to Manufacturing Problems that Can Cause Engine Failure

About 470,000 Hyundai Sonata sedans are currently the subject of a recall due to issues that can result in engine failure. According to Hyundai, the sedans include 2011 & 2012 models that have a 2- or 2.4-liter gas engines.

A Closer Look at the Issue/Defect

Hyundai recently issued two recalls for its 2011 & 2012 Sonatas and 2009-2011 Accents, explains a St Louis car accident attorney. Here’s why.

Hyundai recently issued two recalls for its 2011 & 2012 Sonatas and 2009-2011 Accents, explains a St Louis car accident attorney. Here’s why.

The issue that could cause engines to stall is related to an older connecting rod bearing, which could:

  • Restrict the flow of oil to the connecting rod bearings
  • Cause these bearings to overheat and possibly fail
  • Cause the engine to stall, possibly resulting in a car accident if drivers continue driving with these issues.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai has admitted that metal debris may have remained in the crankshaft region (for the crankshafts manufactured at the company’s Alabama plant).

To date, however, Hyundai has not received any reports regarding this problem causing accidents, injuries and/or deaths.

Next Steps for Vehicle Owners

Hyundai is now encouraging vehicle owners affected by this recall to take their cars to their local Hyundai dealership to fix the problems. Dealers will reportedly replace the entire engine at no cost to vehicle owners.

Additionally, Hyundai is offering free extended warranties for the new engines, extending the warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles.

Own a 2009-2011 Accent? Well, That’s Being Recalled Too…

In addition to the engine-related recall issued by Hyundai a few weeks ago, the automaker has also recalled all 2009 to 2011 Accent vehicles.

Expanding on a recall issued in 2013, this recall is related to a defective brake light switch that can fail – in other words, the defect prevents the brake lights from turning on when the driver steps on the brake pedal. Additionally, these vehicles have the follow problems:

  • The cruise control may not deactivate when drivers step on the brakes.
  • The gear shift can get lodged in the park
