Faulty wipers systems that can cause vehicle fires have led GM to recall some 2016 SUVs, a St Louis personal injury attorney explains. Here’s more on this recall.

Do NOT use the windshield wipers on 2016 Buick Enclaves, Chevrolet Traverses and GMC Acadia sports utility vehicles (SUVs), General Motors is now warning Americans.

That is because the wipers on these new SUVs are susceptible to electrical shorts that could cause fires, the major automaker has explained.

This problem led to GM announcing a recall yesterday for about 32,000 of its 2016 SUVs. According to officials, most of the affected vehicles have not yet been sold, and those that have will be prioritized for fixes.

A Closer Look at the Problem

The specific problem associated with the recalled 2016 SUVs, GM has explained, is potentially defective windshield wiper systems, which have faulty covers that can allow the system’s terminals to come into contact with each other. If this happens, the wiper motor can overheat, causing a fire to erupt in this motor.

This issue was reportedly discovered about a week ago at a GM manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan. According to officials:

  • A quality control manager discovered and reported the problem.
  • No vehicle fires outside of the Lansing plant have been reported to GM or transportation safety regulators – yet.

In fact, given that about 75 percent of the recalled GM SUVs remain at dealerships (unsold), it may be possible that officials caught this vehicle equipment defect at just the right time – before the majority of these vehicles have been sold and before this problem has caused fires, accidents, injuries and/or deaths among the American public.

What Will Happen Next

At this point, GM and safety officials are focused on fixing the 6,400 or so impacted SUVs that have already been purchased in the U.S. Those who own affected vehicles are encouraged to take their SUV back to the dealership where they bought it so the faulty wiper covers can be replaced ASAP.

GM has also noted that:

  • It will coordinate the pickup and repair of affected vehicles that motorists cannot bring to dealerships (due to, for instance, poor weather).
  • It will provide rental cars for drivers whose vehicles cannot be immediately fixed (in the event there is any delay obtaining the right replacement parts).
