FMSCA Requires Truckers to Switch to Electronic Logs within 2 Years

By 2017, commercial truckers and bus drivers in the U.S. will have to be using electronic logging devices – not paper logs – to record their driving and on-duty time. This is according to a new Final Rule that regulators at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), who are focused on enhancing compliance with hours-of-service (HOS) regulations.

HOS regulations restrict the amount of driving truckers can do in a day and in a week in order to reduce trucker fatigue.

With this new ELD Final Rule in place, regulators expect that, annually:

  • 26 lives will be saved and more than 560 injuries will be prevented (due to the prevention of fatigue-related truck accidents)
  • More than $1 billion will be saved, mostly due to the reduction in industry paperwork.
