Drunk Driving Crackdown Is On for Labor Day Weekend: What You Need to Know

As you get ready to kick off your Labor Day weekend and celebrate with family and friends, be aware that a drunk driving crackdown is currently underway across the nation.

Backed by about 10,000 law enforcement agencies, this effort will involve more traffic cops on patrol – and more sobriety checkpoints being set up – tonight and continuing through Monday, September 7th, officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have noted.

“Drunk driving is deadly, it’s against the law, and despite years of progress, it’s still a problem,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has commented.

Elaborating on this national Labor Day drunk driving crackdown, Foxx has also explained that, “with the help of law enforcement around the country, we’re getting the word out– if you’ve been drinking, don’t drive, because if you do, you will be stopped, you will be arrested and you will be prosecuted.”

Drunk Driving Facts & Statistics at a Glance

Elucidating Secretary Foxx’s points above, the following drunk driving facts and statistics underscore how big of a problem this negligent driving behavior is in the U.S.:

  • A drunk driver injures someone in a collision about every 2 minutes.
  • A drunk driver kills someone in a fatal wreck every 52 minutes.
  • Approximately 2 in every 3 people in the U.S. will be part of a drunk driving accident at some point in their lives (either causing or being victimized by the accident).

As you get ready to celebrate your Labor Day holiday, here’s what you should know to stay safe and avoid a drunk driving accident, a St Louis auto accident attorney explains.

If you’ll be driving or traveling this weekend as part of your Labor Day festivities, the following tips can help you stay safe and reduce your chances of being involved in a drunk driving accident:

  • Get a sober driver or plan your ride in advance if you will be consuming alcohol as part of yoru Labor Day celebrations.
  • If you are hosting a party and serving alcohol, keep numbers of taxis (or other ride services) on hand, and do your best to not let intoxicated people get behind the wheel.
  • If you will be driving, stay sober and buckle up. Wearing your seatbelt can reduce your chances of being injured (and killed) by more than 40 percent if you end up being hit by an impaired river.
  • If you see other motorists on the road who appear to be drunk or driving recklessly, report them to the authorities.
