When Other Drivers Aren’t Alert and Riding Safe Isn’t Enough

May was National Motorcycle Awareness month.  This campaign is designed to remind motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers to safely “share the road.”After all, motorcyclists have the same rights and privileges as any other driver on the road.  According to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), an individual riding a motorcycle is 5 times more likely to be injured than a person driving or riding in a car.

Motorcycles are everywhere, and other drivers need to take notice.  Whether you are an enthusiast or the casual rider, the risk of getting into an accident is very real.

It’s no surprise that motorcyclists involved in accidents sustain the most serious of injuries.  Motorcyclists have significantly less protection than occupants of passenger vehicles which makes them highly vulnerable if something goes wrong.  If something does go wrong, injuries are unavoidably serious and sometimes permanently life alerting.  The medical costs can quickly skyrocket, and the financial burden can seem unmanageable.

A motorcyclists’ vulnerability does not stop there.  More often than not, motorcyclists are blamed for causing most accidents.  This is not a generalization that has held true, however.  There are a host of reasons why other drivers are typically at fault when an accident happens including, distracted driving, failing to see the motorcycle, not signaling, cutting in front of the motorcycle, and often misjudging the speed or proximity of a motorcycle.

If a motorcyclist believes an accident was the fault of the other driver, it is important to build a case on that premise in order for the motorcyclist to recover any compensation.  If you or a loved one are among, or plan to join the over 150,000 riders in Missouri, know your rights and research in advance who can help you if you ever need to exercise them.

St. Charles has some of the finest attorneys who specialize in handling motorcycle accidents.  As an accident victim, selecting the right attorney to represent you can be the difference between being awarded compensation or not.  You may want to consider some key qualities when choosing the right attorney.  Be sure that an attorney is knowledgeable in motorcycle claims.  Experience goes a long way.  Another important quality is having someone that is sympathetic.

After going through a traumatic event, you want an attorney who will not only be able to advocate for you effectively but also someone who will care enough to truly listen to what you have been through.  Additionally, you want an attorney who will zealously represent you.  Attorneys who have a true desire to represent accident victims will bolster the likelihood of a favorable outcome.

Lastly, and arguably the most important quality to seek in an attorney, is someone who will be patient with you.  As an accident victim, you have been through a lot and the legal process can be very confusing.  You want an attorney who will take the time to explain what to expect with your claim and keep the lines of communication open.
