As people throughout the nation enjoy the holiday season, officials at the U.S. DOT are urging motorists to not forget about safety – and to not get behind the wheel if they have been drinking alcohol. This is part of a national anti-drunk driving campaign that occurs every year around the holidays, when the incidence of drunk driving crashes surges.
In fact, as officials have pointed out, last year in December alone, 788 people were killed in drunk driving crashes. This represented about 8 percent of all drunk driving deaths that occurred in 2014.
Noting the importance of making safe choices during the holiday season, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has remarked:
We hope the millions of Americans who will be on the road over the holidays will make the safe choice not to drink and drive… Across the country, local law enforcement officers will be on the roads, protecting all of us from the risk of drunk driving.
