Are Driverless Vehicles the Future of Traffic Safety?

Self-driving vehicles are no longer just fantasies of film. They are being developed and tested by a number of companies, and some have predicted that driverless vehicles could:

  • Be available commercially and prominently on the roads as soon as 2020
  • Reduce the incidence of traffic accidents – This is based on the fact that more than 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by some type of human error (according to transportation safety officials), so taking the human out of the driver’s seat could eliminate this factor.

Below, we’ll point out some of the latest reports about driverless vehicles to try to answer the question whether these vehicles really will be the future of transportation safety.

Two types of driverless vehicles are being developed – In fact, automakers are developing partially autonomous driving vehicles, which require some driver input/oversight, as well as fully autonomous self-driving vehicles, which are intended to reach a destination without any driver intervention needed. The fully autonomous vehicles are expected to hit the scene by 2019.

  • There may be as many as 10 million self-driving cars on the road by 2020 – This prediction is related to vehicles with partial autonomy.
  • Self-driving cars are expected to save thousands of lives – Specifically, researchers have estimated that as many as 2,500 lives will be saved by self-driving vehicles over the next four to five years. Although there have not been a lot of predictions regarding how many traffic collisions (not just fatal wrecks) will be prevented, many expect that these numbers too would be in the thousands (if not the hundreds of thousands).
  • But, there are some substantial barriers to them entering the mainstream – In addition to overcoming people’s desire to be in control and be behind the wheel, other barriers to self-driving cars becoming mainstream include their costs (which are significantly higher than standard economy vehicles), as well as the need to develop a regulatory framework for them.
