After a Traffic Accident, These 6 Steps Can Protect You & a Future Claim

Keeping a clear head and knowing what to do after a traffic collision can be essential to protecting your wellbeing, as well as a future auto accident claim. In fact, although you may think you know what steps to take after a collision, it never hurts to revisit these steps so that they are fresh on your mind (especially if collisions leave you disoriented and/or in shock).

Following a Traffic Collision…

Step 1 – Call the cops and wait at the scene.

If you are not too badly injured, report the accident to law enforcement authorities and wait for them to arrive. While cops can help direct traffic around the wreckage and get it cleared, they can also investigate the collision and develop official reports regarding potential liability. These reports can be important later to establishing fault.

Step 2 – Get medical attention for your injuries.

If you don’t receive emergency medical care at the accident scene/a hospital, be sure to see your doctor ASAP after the collision to get your possible car accident injuries assessed/diagnosed. Early medical interventions can be crucial to preventing your injuries from becoming more complicated. They can also be pivotal to documenting the exact nature and severity of the injuries caused by the wreck.

Step 3 – Exchange driving/personal info with other involved parties.

If possible, take some time to collect information from other drivers/parties involved in the collision. Get their names, contact info, insurance info, driving/vehicle info, etc. (and share your info with them). Consider recording these details in a text or email (and sending it to yourself for future reference). Also, if there were witnesses to the collision, try to get their names/contact info also.

Step 4 – Take pictures of as much of the damage as you can.

Important photos to take after a collision can be pictures of the damage to your vehicle, other involved vehicles and any fixed objects on the road (like guardrails, traffic signs, etc.). You may also want to take pictures of the visible injuries you and/or your passengers may have sustained. All of this can be crucial evidence later, helping to establish liability and the extent of the damage caused by the wreck.

Step 5 – Report the collision to your insurance provider.

Within a few days of the accident (and as soon as reasonably possible), contact your auto insurance provider to report the collision. You don’t have to go into a lot of details or make an official statement at this point – and you shouldn’t if you are not prepared to do so.

However, you should, at the very least, report the accident, as your auto policy may have very strict provisions about how soon after a wreck you need to report it to the insurer.
