4 Important Holiday Safety Tips from the CSPC

The holidays can be a time for family, celebrations, gift giving and joy. With all of the extra décor and happenings, however, there can be some new risks that arise during the holiday season. And understanding what these risks are can be the key to minimizing them and avoiding serious injuries – and making the holidays as safe, memorable and fun as possible.

To this end, here are some important holiday safety tips from the officials at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

  1. Practice Christmas tree safety if you will have a live tree at home – This means watering the tree, keeping it away from heat sources and
  2. Practice light safety – Check light strands for fraying or broken wiring before hanging them, and unplug your lights before leaving home or retiring for the evening.
  3. Be careful hanging decorations – Know your mobility limitations, and go over ladder safety practices if you will be climbing a ladder to hang your holiday décor.
  4. Give the gift of safety – This is really aimed at those giving gifts to children. Look for age-appropriate gifts, and whenever possible, give safety gear to go along with certain gifts (like sports equipment).
