2015 Is Shaping Up to Be the Deadliest Year for Motorists since 2007, NSC Says

Since 2008, each year, there has been a steady decline in the number of fatal traffic accidents occurring on U.S. roadways. This year, however, may break the streak, as the number of deadly traffic accidents that have taken place over the first six months of 2015 has increased by about 14 percent when compared to the numbers from last year. This is according to the National Safety Council (NSC), a safety advocacy group.

The NSC reports that, in the first 6 months of 2015, fatal traffic accidents have risen about 14%. A St Louis auto accident attorney discusses this and other NSC findings

In fact, from January to June 2014, the NSC says that there were 16,400 fatal traffic accidents. Over this same period in 2015, however, the number jumped up to 18,630.

Additionally, as part of its study, the NSC found that 2015 seems to be shaping up to be generally worse in other ways for many motorists, as compared to 2014. Specifically, the NSC found that:

  • There has been about a 30 percent increase in the incidence of serious motor vehicle accident injuries this year.
  • The total costs for all traffic accidents (fatal and nonfatal) for the six months of 2015 are about 24 percent higher – rounding out at about a whopping $152 billion this year.

Why the Spike in 2015? Jobs & Gas Prices Are Factors, Some Suggest

The significant increase in fatal traffic accidents this year may seem baffling on the surface, but two key factors have contributed to it, some researchers have suggested. In fact, they claim that the drop in unemployment has led to more people needing to commute regularly to work. That, along with a salary and low gas prices, also means that an increasing number of workers are opting to drive themselves, rather than carpool or take public transportation.

These two converging facts have led to a lot more people being on the roads, particularly during some of the busiest driving times of the day – like morning and evening rush hour.

More motorists on the roads, in turn, usually means greater chances of impaired, distracted, tired or just plain aggressive drivers causing accidents. At higher speeds or when larger trucks are involved in collisions, the outcomes can be – and clearly have been – deadly.
