Bicycle Accidents
Bicyclists and other cyclists ride two-wheeled vehicles, tricycles, and any other cycles powered by foot or hand pedals. Some bicycles now come with electric assist motors. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, in 2006 there were a total of 1,096 traffic fatalities in Missouri. Seven (7) of these fatalities were cyclists.
All bicycle riders should wear helmets that fit properly, with the buckle and straps securely fastened. Bicycle accident head injury prevention is best achieved by use of a bicycle helmet. Bicycle accidents often occur for many of the same reasons as other traffic accidents. However, many drivers in motorized vehicles often do not respect cyclists, which in turn causes more accidents. Aggressive driving, including failure to keep adequate clearance (3 feet or more) when passing bicyclists on the road, failure to look prior to opening doors or driving away from parking spaces, or failure to yield to bicyclists at intersections can lead to serious and even deadly collisions.
